Summers Sons – Balance
“Balance” opens “Lightworks”, the new album from Summers Sons and C.Tappin, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. Brothers Turt and Slim, South London through and through, built their name on sample-led jazz rap, but this record moves them into fully live territory. C.Tappin’s piano work anchors the track, with Poppy Daniels on trumpet, Frank Formers on guitar and Mack Wood Ling on drums.
Eight years went into this album, and you can hear that time in how unhurried the track feels. Turt’s verses carry the weight of adulthood, family, the grind of keeping a shared vision alive against everything life throws at you. Slim’s production gives him room to breathe rather than crowding the mix with hooks. It’s a slow build, but it earns that patience.
“The message is hope”, the trio said when they shared the track, and that’s exactly what “Balance” delivers without overstating it. There’s no big chorus moment, no obvious turn where the song announces its theme. Instead it just sits with the struggle and lets the perseverance show up in the playing itself, in how tight these three musicians and their guests lock together after years of working side by side.
DeepMatter Records picked up “Lightworks” as the label’s first release with the trio, and “Balance” makes a strong case for why.
